TWO Clydebank schools left the opposition in their wake to claim gold medals at the West Dunbartonshire School Cross-Country Relay.

Over 500 pupils took part in the event at Balloch Country Park earlier this month.

Goldenhill and St Stephen’s Primary school came out on top in the P7 race.

In the P7 girls, the Goldenhill team of Abby Longford, Hannah Jordan and Kenzie McIntosh were first home ahead of Gartocharn A and St Mary’s (Alexandria).

In the P7 boys race the St Stephen’s team of Mark Smith, Sam Murdoch and Daniel McKell were on form as they raced to victory ahead of Knoxland A and Knoxland B.

Meanwhile in the P6 girls race. the Clydemuir B team of Amy Roberts, Amy Logan and Abbie Fox took the bronze medal.

In the P6 boys race Evan McMillan, Aidan Westwater and David Wisnieski won the bronze medal for Our Holy Redeemer Primary.

The full list of Clydebank area schools taking part was: Carleith, Clydemuir, Edinbarnet, Gavinburn, Goldenhill, Kilbowie, Our Holy Redeemer, St Eunan’s, St Joseph’s, St Mary’s, St Stephen’s, Clydebank High and St Peter the Apostle.

St Mary’s Alexandria were crowned overall champions of the day. Assistant sports development officer Paul Mooney said: “I thought the day was a huge success. We witnessed a lot of talented cross-country athletes cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd at Balloch Park.

“The relay highlighted the importance of working together, so it was great to see every runner get the support from their team-mates as they pushed towards the finish.”
