CLYDEBANK progressed to the second round of the New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup with a 4-2 win over Rutherglen Glencairn on Saturday.

First half goals from Alan Vezza and Robert O’Neill gave Bankies a two goal lead, before Rutherglen hit back through a McLaughlin penalty. Captain Phil Barclay’s thunderous effort and Ryan Holms’ cool finish made it four, while Rutherglen missed a penalty before adding a second through McCarry.

Bankies boss Budgie McGhie made two changes to the side that drew with Yoker, Andy Paterson and Ryan Holms replacing the injured duo of Hashim Cole and Joel Kasubandi.

After a fairly even opening period, It took just nine minutes for Bankies to break the deadlock. Paterson’s lofted pass found Jordan Shelvey on the left, whose cross found Vezza lurking at the back post to steer his header past Kerr.

Ten minutes later, Bankies doubled their lead. After tenacious play by Barlcay which saw him win a free kick at the edge of the box, O’Neill’s right footed effort proved too strong for Kerr as O’Neill grabbed his second goal in as many weeks.

Two minutes before half time, Glens found their way back into the match when they were awarded a penalty. Danny MacKinnon’s challenge on Jonny Boal was late, with referee Grant Irvine pointing immediately to the spot. Denis McLaughlin drilled the resulting spot kick past Lumsden as Bankies went into half time with a 2-1 lead.

After a tense start to the second half, Clydebank effectively put the game to rest in the 70th minute. Ryan Holm’s corner was headed away by McGuire into the path of Barclay, whose sumptuous strike flew into the bottom left hand corner, giving Kerr no chance.

Scorer turned provider five minutes later when Barclay’s clever reverse ball slipped in Holms, who stroked home with a fine first touch effort.

With ten minutes remaining, Glencairn were awarded their second spot kick off the day when McGuire went down under a challenge from Vezza. McLaughlin stepped up again, this time sending his effort crashing against the crossbar.

However, five minutes from time Glens did get a second. A cross from the right found it’s way across the box to McCarry, who fired in what was a mere consolation as Clydebank remain undefeated in 6 matches.
