AS was reported in the Post (02/012/09) Scottish Water (SW) has been given £30m by the Water Industry Commission (WIC) - this is very good news for the area.

SW now has the means to eradicate the awful stench we have endured for years.

The money it has been given is for the works as a whole, this is clearly stated in the final report, so there is no excuse for not dealing with the stench.

A large proportion will of course go to prevent pollution seeping in to the Clyde, and that is right and proper, but the air pollution we have suffered with for years has to be dealt with also.

Pollution is still pollution whether it is in the water or in the air.

MSPs Gil Paterson and Des McNulty both said that the smell has not been as bad this year, that is correct it has not, but as everyone in the town knows, this has been down to weather conditions.

Even so, it still smells and complaints are still coming in to council about it - not much has changed.

Just two to three months ago SW was insisting that the problems at Dalmuir were not as bad as the residents were making out.

It claimed the measures that it had put in place would be sufficient for the time being and no extra money would be spent at the plant, yet here we have the WIC giving it £30m to fix the plant - this publicly shows up the half truths and misleading statements SW has given the residents for years.

An SW spokesman said that it welcomed the news.

SW fought hard to get Dalmuir removed from its OPA score and failed - it welcomes the news?

Not as much as the residents and your customers, after years of misleading, or attempting to mislead, you have now been exposed along with your deceit, you have no more excuses and have nowhere to hide.

Give Dalmuir its clean air back.

Daniel Lennie, chairman of Dalmuir High Rise Residents Association
