IT is with great sadness, followed by outrage, that we learned of the intention to demolish the Clydebank Bathhouse in Bruce Street.

This seems yet another example of deliberate destruction of quality assets in the town.

The council has been irresponsible in letting this building deteriorate, and that carelessness in looking after our assets now seems to justify its destruction.

This is one of the few Edwardian bathhouses in the UK and reprsents the history of industrial towns and their social climates in the 20th Century.

The building and its contents are intact and to destroy such an important aspect of the town would be an act of vandalism.

There are few enough original buildings of quality architecture left in the town - this one is a James Miller building - and few managed to survive the Clydebank Blitz, or the subsequent attacks by successive short sighted council officials who have systematically desecrated the remains of our once proud town in the name of progress.

Come on Bankies, do not let it happen. Start signing the petition in your local library or newsagent now.

Walter Graham, secretary, Parkhall, North Kilbowie and Central Community Council
