Stalemate ends eventful season

BANKIES brought down the curtain on a momentous season with a goalless draw against Maybole on Monday.

It was the team"s first trip to Ayrshire since almost 4,000 fans followed them to the Scottish Junior Cup in Kilmarnock last month.

But cosy Ladywell Park was a million miles away from the glamour of the Rugby Park showpiece.

Gaffer Budgie McGhie"s injury-hit squad was bolstered by three trialists and the manager also had to name himself as a sub.

Although there was little at stake, both sides went about their business the right way and what followed was an entertaining match.

Ross Campbell, from Campsie Black Watch, turned in his second impressive performance as a trialist. The big defender created the first real chance of the match when he picked out Charlie Hobbs with a perfect pass, but the striker"s powerful shot was blocked superbly by Scott Johnstone.

"Bole threatened at the other end and Stefan Gonet had to be at his best to deny Andrew Johnstone. Hobbs pulled up with a groin strain before the half hour and was replaced by Kevin Proctor.

Young Nicky Cairney did well to set up John Jack in Bankies next attack, but the midfielder failed to capitalise.

Just before the break, Gonet pulled off the save of the match with a brilliant one-handed stop to keep the game all square.

Mark Hailstones" dipping shot was then touched onto the crossbar by Johntone. Kevin Proctor was first to react, but his efforts from the rebound was blocked.

The match fizzled out with some decent half chances at either end, but neither side really deserved to win.

McGhie was pleased with the result, and especially the performances of the three youngsters, Campbell, Cairney and sweeper Jamie Coll.

'I thought the young players did very well and under the circumstances,' said McGhie. 'A draw was a decent result. Over all I am disappointed we didn"t do better in the league this season and that is something we will have to put right next term.'

The result means Clydebank finished in fifth spot, but their historic Scottish Cup final appearance made it another successful season.

And the fans who travelled down to Ayrshire warmly applauded the players from the pitch in appreciation.
