Our city is preparing for the world’s sporting eyes to be on us once again.

That’s right in three months’ time 3,000 athletes from across Europe will descend on Glasgow to compete in more than 12 sports as part of the first ever European Championships.

With the buzz that the Commonwealth Games brought just four years ago, I am sure we’ll similar scenes with such a packed agenda both in the sporting side of things as well as the cultural, meaning that there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

And this idea was cemented for me even further at last week’s education, skills and early years city policy committee.

I was so excited and impressed to hear the plans led by the physical education, physical activity and school sport team in the city council to ensure Glasgow’s young people play their part in the championships.

Through engaging secondary school pupils in the young ambassadors programme, run in partnership with Youth Sports Trust and sportscotland, 170 Young Ambassadors have been given the challenge of organising an event inspired by the Glasgow 2018 European Championship within their local community, asking them to reach out to their local feeder primary schools.

The outcome is that there is now a full calendar of more than 1,400 events happening across the city, all based on the sports that feature at the championships. From a swimming gala to a triathlon with some golf, athletics and rowing thrown into the mix.

I know our community will be making their mark as part of the European Championships whether it’s with our young people taking part in the enormous amount of events taking place across the city in the run up to the games, maybe going out and enjoying the festival 2018, which will bring the very best in music, art, dance, theatre, design and so much more to the streets of Glasgow or even if it’s going along to watch some of the sport itself.

It’s sure to be an exciting 11 days for our city – just 92 days to go.
