I noticed last week’s increases to gas and electricity prices from British Gas and EDF Energy. These prices are rising way above inflation and local people are struggling to cope with the constantly increasing bills.

We are being badly served by our extremely well-paid politicians who tell us that shiny new wind turbines are producing ever more clean, green energy. Does it make any difference to your energy bills? No, it actually makes them worse.

A recent proposal to build a windfarm above Bonhill was continued for further consideration by the council. It sounds reasonable as it seeks to establish local ownership to some degree.

Looking further into windfarm operations tells a different story however. Overall, they cost more to operate than they earn from electricity production. The owners, the big energy companies, receive more money to shut down their turbines than when they are actually producing. Along with huge government subsidies this makes wind power very costly and adds to your energy bills.

If the windfarm application succeeds at Bonhill then how long will it be before a windfarm is proposed for the Old Kilpatrick Hills?

The decision has been made to reduce grass cutting and remove flower displays from our public parks and open spaces. Along with the new charges for garden maintenance for the elderly can we now expect to live in the land of high hedges and untidy gardens, with no respite in our once glorious Dalmuir Park, Levengrove and Christie Park? A dull summer awaits.

The issue of trains stop-skipping through stations is still happening, leaving passengers stranded and late for work. Apparently it’s the least worst option for the rail operator as it incurs fewer fines than cancelling trains.

A useful bit of advice if you find yourself stuck: press the help button at the station and the rail operator is obliged to assist with alternative transport.

The horrific story about the lady being attacked by her dog in Dalmuir has certainly upset many local people. Lots of dog walkers use the canal and surrounding fields and there are very few problems apart from discarded little black poo bags.

I hope this is a one-off case as the canal is a popular walking route with locals and visitors, many of them children. Luckily the woman had a mobile phone and was able to call 999 but her injuries were severe. I know that most dog owners are very responsible but it is still very alarming to hear of such a serious incident. Let’s hope the lady recovers fully.
