The much-loved Clydebank maritime clock chimed for the first time last week after nearly a decade out of action.

Clyde Shopping Centre staff switched on the clock - which features a boat and plays a sea shanty alongside a show of moving characters every quarter hour - for 24 hours as a test, from 12pm on Thursday to 12pm on Friday.

Intrigued shoppers paused to watch the clock and its figures come to life on the hour after years of silence.

The clock stopped working a number of years ago, but the manager of the centre, Andrew Forrester, wanted to bring it back to life and launched an appeal in the Clydebank Post in February to try and bring its rebirth about.

Andrew said: “We have some small repairs to carry out now and parts to replace.

“The support the clock has received has been fantastic and when we originally launched our own appeal in February we did not anticipate just how loved this landmark was.

“The sheer number of people interested in seeing the clock working again showed us that the investment in repairs was money well spent and in the public’s interest.”

Once the repairs have been carried out, Clyde Shopping Centre will announce an official re-launch date.
