FAMILIES have been left counting their blessings after a police car - which crashed into a garden where children play - did not hit anyone.
Dad Douglas Wilson, 31, believes if the car had not hit a tree it would have ploughed into the wall of his home at the spot where his wife Leanne and two-year-old son Cameron were sitting inside.
Douglas said: “All that keeps going through my head is what if? What if that tree wasn’t there?
“If it hadn’t been for the tree, the car would have come right through the wall.
“It doesn’t even bear thinking about.”
Douglas also believes it was only luck that children were not playing in the communal garden space at the block on Dumbarton Road at the junction of Boquhanran Road.
Speaking on Monday, he said: “I really didn’t sleep last night.
“It affected me more than it affected Leanne, because if it had come through the wall then Leanne and Cameron both would have got hit and I could have lost them.
“Cameron usually plays out in the front garden but there are a lot of kids in this close.
“They play out in the side garden because that’s the communal area."
The accident occurred at 11.20am as the police car was travelling down Dumbarton Road and the officers in the car sustained minor injuries.
Chief Inspector Ian Wallace from Clydebank Police would like to reassure the public that the incident is being fully investigated and that officers receive extensive training before driving police cars.
He said: “Police officers routinely have to go through a qualification in terms of their ability to drive police vehicles, particularly when they have been involved in a road accident.
“I’m unable to comment on the specific circumstances of this particular incident as it is still subject to an investigation."
