HUNDREDS of school children hoping to take part in the historic visit of Pope Benedict have been left disappointed after the council decided it will keep schools open.

West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) has opted not to follow the example of some other local authorities which are giving some pupils time off.

However, WDC did confirm that authorised absences will be granted if parents ask for permission in good time.

In a letter to head teachers from director of Education, Terry Lanagan, it was confirmed a large number of pupils from St Peter the Apostle High will be attending the open air mass on Thursday September 16, accompanied by staff.

No such plans have been arranged for primary pupils, but the council has said any parents wanting to take their children must seek prior permission and authorised absence will be granted.

Last week South Lanarkshire Council announced staff and children in Catholic schools will be allowed to leave at lunchtime to see Pope Benedict when he appears at Bellahouston.

Other local authorities have said they will allow for authorised absences so that staff and pupils can join more than 100,000 worshippers expected to descend on Glasgow.

Head teachers in South Lanarkshire have been told the decision to let pupils away early is up to them, whilst North Lanarkshire Council stated children must take their Mass ticket to school as proof they are going.
