AN unoccupied block of flats was destroyed by a massive fire yesterday (Tuesday).

The fire brigade was alerted to the blaze at the new build Strathclyde Homes development in Ellerslie Road, Yoker, at 4pm.

The entrance on Dumbarton Road was cordoned off but huge crowds gathered at the top of Greenlaw Road to watch the blaze develop.

As fire raged, walls of the unoccupied flats began collapsing and onlookers were told to get back.

Firefighters put their hoses into the Clyde to make sure they had enough water.

A total of 40 firefighters from Knightswood, Clydebank, Govan, Yorkhill and Maryhill community fire stations brought the flames under control after several hours.

Surrounding properties were evacuated with assistance from Strathclyde Police for public safety reasons.

Firefighters were still on the scene at 9pm to make sure all pockets of fire were extinguished.

The fire was visible for miles around - from as far as Old Kilpatrick and Renfrewshire.

One eye witness told the Post: “I saw the smoke when I was in a petrol station in Old Kilpatrick.

“I followed it along Dumbarton Road and I couldn’t believe when I came across the fire.

“The walls were collapsing as I stood and watched it, and the heat from the blaze was unbearable in some places.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known but a full investigation is being jointly undertaken by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and Strathclyde Police.
