CLYDEBANK’S maritime clock will be chiming its tune for the first time in more than a decade as it is switched on for a 24-hour test run.
Following a successful Facebook campaign, set up by Vickie Humphrey, to restore the historic timepiece, the MV Clydebank, has been fully restored and will go through a test cycle on Thursday September 2.
Clyde Shopping Centre manager, Andrew Forrester, tracked down the original clock builder, Ian Haward, and commissioned him to restore it to its former glory, after thousands of people joined the Facebook campaign, ‘I Remember the Clydebank Clock’.
Following visits by Ian and hours of repairs, the familiar sound of its sea shanty songs will once again be heard hourly after years of broken silence.
The restoration is backed by an army of online support - more than 3,700 people have joined the Facebook campaign.
Mr Forrester said: “We are delighted that shoppers and residents are as excited about the clock being fixed as we are.
“The testing, in a couple of weeks, represents a progression towards the completion of the project and we would like to thank everyone for their interest and support.”
