THE long-awaited £75m redevelopment of the dilapidated Drumchapel Shopping Centre is “unlikely to proceed as planned”.

Premier Property Group (PPG) - which is run by Ranger’s former chairman David Murray - agreed a £75m masterplan for the shopping centre with Glasgow City Council (GGC) in 2007.

But the work never began and the shopping centre has been left rundown and partially demolished.

Drumchapel Community Council wrote to PPG to ask about the future of the project and received a letter back earlier this month saying that the masterplan has been “shelved”.

After receiving the confirmation the disappointed community council members agreed to write to all the concerned partners, including GGC, asking to discuss the issue as they believe a decent centre is vital for the area.

Meanwhile, Drumchapel councillor, Paul Carey, is organising an online petition to gather residents’ views on what should be done there.

He said: “We’re pursuing the council to get some type of plan in place to regenerate the shopping centre.

“We are starting an online petition for people to give us their views so I can take it up with the council and PPG."

GGC, however, says that it is confident development at the shopping centre will pick up once the economic climate improves.

The petition details will be published in the Post once it is up and running.
