A “STOLEN” car - which had been involved in a police pursuit - ended up in the canal after being driven down a residential cul-de-sac.
The purple Vauxhall Corsa plunged into the Forth and Clyde after being driven up Nairn Street in Dalmuir, around 11.30pm on Wednesday night, closely followed by a police car.
It is believed the officers had just spotted the suspect vehicle after hearing an alert going out on their radio about it.
It is understood another police patrol had given chase to the car earlier that night without success.
The vehicle had been allegedly stolen from Glasgow Road, Dumbarton, at some time during the evening.
One resident of Nairn Street, who had not been aware of the incident until the following morning, told the Post: “I went out to get my paper in the morning and I took a couple of looks at it before I realised what it was.
“You don’t expect to see a car in the canal.”
The car was removed from the canal on Tuesday morning at 10.30am.
It is believed the driver and a passenger in the car got out before it went into the canal.
A 34-year-old man was later arrested. He was has been charged with stealing a car, and also for allegedly housebreaking and travelling in a stolen car.
