TARGET: St Andrew's Church

BRAZEN thieves have been looting from buildings, stripping away anything they can sell and causing thousands of pounds of damage in the process.

Crooks ripped lead off the roof of Drumchapel St Andrew's Church, also known as the White Church, on Garscadden Road - causing the place of worship to be flooded out as soon as it rained.

And, in a series of separate hits, the boarded up Knightswood Swimming Pool has suffered a number of break-ins with piping and showers pulled out and taken.

Meanwhile, members of the congregation at Drumchapel St Andrew's had to work for hours to clean up the mess there when water started pouring in soon after the theft on Saturday July 3.

John Purves, the church minister, said that luckily no services or groups had been put out by the theft.

He told the Post: "We've heard a few places have been done in this manner recently.

"Repairs will have to be done, it was an absolute blow.

"One bit of the roof was completely stripped."

Regarding Knightswood Swimming Pool, police say they have stepped up patrols.

Again, metals were targeted at the now-deserted building, which was closed earlier this year to save cash, and police are eager to prevent it from further damage.

A spokesman for Glasgow Life, formerly Glasgow Culture and Sport, confirmed that the pool has been hit several times.

The spokesman added: "A number of additional security measures have been put in place at the former Knightswood Pool as a result of the recent break-ins.

"We are also in discussions about finding a suitable future use for the building."
