THE most precious plot of land in Clydebank's history is being treated as a "dump" by its owners, the town's MSP claimed this week.

The vast area where John Brown's shipyard put Clydebank on the world map has mostly sat idle for the eight years since a grand plan to build on it was announced.

This week the site's owners, a group called Clydeside Regeneration, submitted a request to extend the period in which it can sit on the land.

There are no hard plans to lay as much as a brick of the development which would include 1,650 homes, office space, shops, restaurants, bars and public space.

The move, or lack of it, has infuriated MSP Des McNulty, who has called on West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC), which controls planning applications, to say "enough is enough".

Mr McNulty, said: "The owners, who are property speculators, are trying to get more money out of developers who otherwise want to develop the site.

"It is a disgrace that these people are holding the town to ransom.

"In terms of heritage and future economic prospects, there is no bigger site for this town - that is more important than the interest of a bunch of speculators."

On Tuesday, councillors on WDC's Planning Committee will consider the latest request from Clydeside Regeneration to extend the timescale of its planning consent, which runs out in four weeks.

The planning permission was originally granted on June 2, 2004, with details agreed on July 1, 2005 - after which Clydeside Regeneration had five years to commence work. The company has now asked to be given until 2013 - one year after it originally said the whole development would be complete.

The owners say that the housing market is currently "not viable" for such a project.

The site is currently used to keep plant vehicles and demolition waste, and the Planning agenda reveals in another application that Clydeside Regeneration has requested to formally adopt the site for this use.

Clydeside Regeneration is registered with Companies House at 118 Dumbarton Road, Clydebank - the former office of Graham and Co Accountants.

When Graham and Co was contacted by the Post this week a member of staff indicated a spokesperson from Clydeside Regeneration would call back, but no call was received.
