THE town's decaying leisure centre is costing taxpayers upwards of £60,000 a year to maintain, the Post can reveal.

In the last year West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) shelled out £65,643 on repairs and maintenance for the aging Play Drome.

Facilities which required work included the spa pool, saunas and showers.

The council's other facilities - the Meadow Centre in Dumbarton and Vale of Leven Swimming Pool in Alexandria - produced a combined bill of £74,500 in repairs and maintenance.

The details are published in response to a Freedom of Information request (FOI) submitted by the Clydebank Post.

They show WDC called out contractors 147 times in the last financial year to do work at the Play Drome, which was opened in the town centre in 1994.

A total of £56,279 was spent on repairs and maintenance the year before and £59,402 in 2007/08 and £56,774 in 2006/07.

A WDC spokeswoman revealed that the spa pool was out of order from December last year and has since been removed due to financial constraints and water penetrating the floor below.

Both saunas had reached the end of their lifespan and were replaced in March this year.

Showers around the health suite of the centre were also removed due to water penetration and they have been permanently sealed off.

The spokeswoman added that the Play Drome was more than twice the size of the Meadow Centre and Vale of Leven Swimming Pool.

WDC's future aim is to build a new replacement for Play Drome.
