The bomb squad was called into Clydebank last week after a shocked gardener found a grenade while digging in her allotment.

Linda Canning came across what is thought to be a Second World War grenade around 4pm on Friday at her allotment on Agamemnon Street, Dalmuir.

At first the Faifley woman thought it was a brick but thankfully noticed it was something more sinister before she hit it with her spade.

She phoned the police who contacted the bomb squad.

The allotments were evacuated and Agamemnon street was closed off for around two-and-half hours.

Linda told the Post: "I was just digging and I hit what I thought was a brick.

"I was just going to wack it with my spade when I looked at it and realised it was a strange shape.

"I thought it looked like a grenade - part of it was flat and I though I could see the pin.

"I phoned Clydebank Police and a young police policeman came down and looked at it - he thought it could be a grenade as well.

"Then the police made sure there wasn't anyone else there.

"They said the bomb squad would be about an hour."

A police spokesman said: "A call was received at approximately 4pm from a woman who suspected she had found a hand grenade.

"Ordnance disposal were called.

"It had the size and shape of a hand grenade and was a possible dangerous item."

The bomb squad - which is part of the military - then removed the grenade and disposed of it in a safe place. Agamemnon Street was reopened around 7pm.
