FORMER shipbuilders are being asked to help build a huge sculpture which celebrates the industry on the Clyde and the memory of those who lost their lives because of the yards.
The Framebender will be a huge sculpture measuring 30ft in height and 46ft in diameter and shaped like the frame of a ship's hull.
It was supposed to be erected last year but it suffered delays because of a change of developer on the land at the head of Queens Quay, where designers want the sculpture built.
However these issues have now been resolved and provided there are no objections and West Dunbartonshire Council grants planning permission, the sculpture will be built this year.
The Framebender has been designed by Clydebank artist Tom McKendrick and is being commissioned by the Clydebank Asbestos Group, which supports many former shipbuilders who were exposed to the deadly dust at the yards.
Tom said: "It's important that we maintain community links with this project, so we're hoping to involve shipbuilders who worked at the yards forty years ago.
"It's important that this is a project for the people and that it ties in with the history of the whole structure."
