RESIDENTS of three flats are in temporary accommodation following a fire in a high rise block.

The fire brigade was called just before 8am on Wednesday to deal with a serious blaze in one of the Blairdardie towers on Great Western Road.

The fire started in a flat on the eleventh floor and affected a number of properties.

Donald McDonald, who lives on the twelfth floor, told the Post how he was getting ready to go to work at 7.45am when he smelt smoke.

He said: "I smelt smoke right away and I looked out the window and saw the fire brigade and police.

"I opened my window and was told by the fire brigade to stay indoors.

"Then the fire crew came up and I was told to evacuate - I was able to walk down the stairs.

"My flat was affected by it - there was slight smoke damage to one of my bedrooms and my next door neighbour's house was quite badly damaged because he is right above the flat where it started.

"He's had to be rehoused."

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said: "Attending crews, faced with severe fire, heat and smoke successfully entered the flat, searched and extinguished the fire and prevented the fire spreading to the upper floor of the building."

The occupier of the flat had managed to escape but he was suffering from severe smoke inhalation and had to be treated by paramedics at the scene and then taken to hospital.

Residents said he was in his thirties and had only recently moved in. No-one else required medical treatment.

Glasgow Housing Association said the flats of the three occupants who had to be rehoused were water damaged and that their temporary accommodation is close to the flats.
