A GRAND-DAD today (Thursday) told a murder trial how he received a frantic phone call from his daughter saying his baby grandchild was seriously ill in hospital.

William Haddock, 56, was giving evidence at the trial of his daughter's former partner Craig Jamieson, who denies murdering his five-month-old daughter Abbie at the family home in Dumbarton Road, Scotstoun, on February 8, 2008.

Jamieson, 30, of 24 Summerhill Place, Drumchapel, has lodged a special defence of incrimination against 29-year-old Nichola Haddock.

Mr Haddock, a bricklayer to trade, told the High Court in Glasgow that he and his wife Agnes booked a ferry and drove from their Belfast home to Yorkhill Hospital, Glasgow, after receiving the call around midday on February 8, 2008.

He told prosecutor Lesley Shand QC that by the time he arrived Abbie was dead and his daughter and Jamieson were being questioned by police.

Mr Haddock said that he and his wife stayed with their grand-daughter's body for a while and added: "A nurse said we would have to say our goodbyes. The child had to go to the morgue."

Under cross-examination by defence QC Ronnie Watson Mr Haddock was asked what state his daughter and Jamieson were in after Abbie's death.

He replied: "Distressed and devastated."

When asked how Jamieson was he said: "Craig was stunned. He could hardly express his feelings."

Mr Haddock added that both of them had to be given medication by a doctor.

The court was told that Jamieson was arrested on February 10, 2008 at his sister's house in Drumchapel.

Mr Haddock who was there when the police arrived said: "Nichola was in disbelief.

"She was crying. I was trying to console her. She couldn't understand why they were arresting Craig.

"Craig was going to get handcuffed. I asked if they could see their way not to handcuff him, just to let him quietly walk out. They were kind enough to do that."

Jamieson is accused of murdering Abbie by inflicting blunt force trauma to her head and body by means unknown to the prosecutor.

He is also charged with assaulting Abbie to her severe injury on January 6, 2008 at their Scotstoun flat.

He denies both charges.

The trial before temporary judge Alastair Stewart continues.
