A BOY has been knocked down outside a Clydebank school in what appears to have been a hit and run.

And the incident has sparked anger over the "unsafe" road running past the busy new superschool.

The 16-year-old pupil was hit by a white van outside St Peter the Apostle High as pupils flocked out of the gates at around 3.30pm.

The driver left the scene after the "glancing" collision.

Police discovered the van involved nearby, but are still trying to trace the driver.

The boy was taken to hospital but fortunately suffered only minor injuries.

However, nearby residents had been very concerned about his well-being immediately after the incident.

One woman said: "I didn't see the accident but I saw what happened afterwards.

"There were three ambulances out there and a paramedic and three police cars.

"The boy was lying in the middle of the road, just in front of the bus stop and there was a big crowd around him.

"I think it was a hit and run because there was no sign of whoever hit him."

Residents say they have been warning the council about traffic problems in Kirkoswald Drive, Drumry, since the new super school opened in August.

It has more than twice the number of pupils that attended St Columba's, which used to stand on the site, and residents say they have been expecting an accident to happen.

They feel the situation can only get worse when St Eunan's Primary is moved to the site in August.

One resident said: "We have said so many times to the council about this road.

"When St Columba's was there we didn't have any problems.

"But since the new school opened we have had a lot.

"There is just too much traffic and cars are squeezing past each other when there really isn't enough room.

"And when they put the St Eunan's Primary here the situation is only going to get worse."

However, West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) denies there is a traffic problem and says making the road one way would make it more unsafe.

Clydebank police are appealing for witnesses to Wednesday's incident or anyone who can help identify the driver to get in touch on 0141 532 3300.
