HISTORIC: The Yoker ferry

The historic Yoker ferry will definitely be axed, according to a leading politician - although operators say nothing has been decided.

Yoker MP John Robertson says the crossing between the area and Renfrew will be stopped and he puts it down to a lack of funding from Holyrood.

Mr Robertson said: "Having had discussions with the SPT, I am left with no doubt that this decision to cut this ferry route is down to a lack of funding from the Scottish Executive."

However SPT says that a final decision on the ferry's future has not yet been made.

Chairman Alistair Watson said: "SPT, like many other local Government agencies and local councils, is facing severe financial problems.

"For next year's budget we have to find savings of two-and-a-half million pounds.

"To that end we are looking at every line of our budget including our current subsidies to bus, Subway and ferry services.

"It is wrong to say the Renfrew Ferry is to be closed. No final decisions have been made nor will be made until SPT's special budget meeting on January 22."

The Clydebank Post will continue to update readers on this story.

The lack of a frequent bus service onwards to Renfrew/Paisley is a hindrance, esp to the elderly and those with children!

PS If you're from Clydebank and the north side it's the RENFREW FERRY and if you're from Renfrew and the south side, it's the YOKER FERRY!

SPT call it the Renfrew Ferry!

WILL THE GOUROCK-KILCREGGAN- HELENSBURGH FERRY BE NEXT for 'debate'?

If you are from Clydebank, Arriva Scotland West operate a very reliable service 300 from Clydebank to Paisley via Erskine, Inchinnan and Airport

    It runs to around 11pm.

But yes, it's a joke, the powers at be moan at us to use cars less, then they cut socially essential services like this one just to save a penny or two.

If SPT cut this service they should reduce the Zonecard prices for Renfrew and Yoker, since the advertised use of teh ticket on a ferry no longer applies!!

Typical MP, AWOL until bad news is imminent then surfacing to point the finger at someone else. Fact is Labour controlled GCC have been rubbish at investing in the Clyde as a potentially great asset for the city for YEARS. SPT, GCC, Holyrood, Westminster - all have agreed that "river regeneration" is a good idea then done sweet FA about it. JR Blaming this on the Scottish Executive is pathetic - you're the MP, do something about it you big lump.
