A GIRL was attacked by a group of her classmates in school.
The assault took place on the hockey pitches during a PE class at the newly built St Peter the Apostle High.
The fifth-year pupils reportedly surrounded her and beat her on Wednesday afternoon.
Education chiefs at West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) said the three girls who carried out the attack were immediately suspended for their "unacceptable behaviour".
A spokeswoman said: "It is hoped the school's CCTV coverage may be able to further clarify events surrounding the incident and also identify potential witnesses.
"There is no reason to suspect there is any parochialism involved in this isolated incident. The school is currently holding a full investigation into this incident and will not tolerate this unacceptable behaviour from its pupils."
WDC did not call the police however, which the Post's source said has "angered" the family of the victim.
The council later clarified that it deemed the suspension of the attackers as sufficient action, and described the attack as a "minor" incident, not worthy of police involvement.
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said it had now received a complaint from a member of the public about a disturbance at St Peter's, and enquiries about the attack were at a "very early stage".
