DRUMCHAPEL residents are to benefit from a series of improvement works to bus stops in an effort to make the area more public transport friendly.

The enhancements form part of plans by Glasgow City Council to increase the quality and reliability of bus services in an effort to encourage more people to leave their cars at home.

Around 32 bus stops will be updated under the scheme, which will see the installation of high access kerbs and new carriageway markings at bus stops on Duntreath Avenue, Drumchapel Road, Halgreen Avenue, Linkwood Drive, Tallant Road and Glenkirk Drive.

Some bus stops may be relocated under the plans, or 'build-outs’ created, which would see a section of the pavement extended out into the road.

Commenting on the plans, Elsie Job, a member of Drumchapel Community Council, said: “I am sure this work will help to improve the experience of travelling on public transport for local people.

“Young mums with prams can often struggle getting from the pavement on to the high step of a bus, as can those with mobility problems.

“Anything which can be done to make life easier for them has to be welcomed.” Ms Job continued: “I’m not entirely convinced about the build-out plans.

“By making the pavement wider, they make the road narrower and I’m worried this could hold up traffic in areas which buses are stopping regularly.

“Hopefully the plans will help public transport in Drumchapel become more efficient, and not have the opposite effect.” Letters will be issued to residents and businesses within 20 metres of affected stops and posters will be placed at each bus stop providing further information.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: “Measures are in place to ensure that any inconvenience to local residents during the improvement work is kept to an absolute minimum.

“Those affected are being notified and we will, of course, be monitoring the situation during the course of the works programme.” The bus stop upgrades are due to commence next month and run until the end of March 2016.
