WITH its proud shipbuilding heritage, Clydebank played host to thousands of workers who made their money working on yards by the Clyde.

Now the humour and camaraderie enjoyed by the shipyard workers will be celebrated in a play which is to visit the town next month.

'Touching Cloth’ is coming to Clydebank Town Hall on Thursday, October 8. Set in the yards in the 1980s, the production follows the lives of platers John, Paul, George and Shug as they earn a crust working on the Clydeside.

Isobel Barrett, director of Tram Direct Theatre Company, told the Post: “The show is really funny, tongue-in-cheek stuff.

“We have had people saying the humour is just like what it was on the yards at that time.

“There are lots of musical and topical references looking back at what was going on in the world, so it evokes a strong sense of nostalgia.” The brainchild of writer John Hughes, himself a former shipyard worker, the show features a young and upcoming cast including real life Bankie, Ryan Kane, whose grandfather was John Hughes’ gaffer when he worked on the shipyards.

Ms Barrett continued: “Ticket sales are going really well so far. The show will evoke lots of happy memories for people in Clydebank and the surrounding areas who worked on the yards, their families and friends.

“Not only that, it would be terrific for anyone who is simply looking for a great night out.” The theatre director added: “Some people have been coming along to see the show two or three times as it tours around various venues. It is fast-paced so you will pick up something different every time.

“We would love to keep on taking the show forward and reaching as wide an audience as possible. We really look forward to bringing Touching Cloth to Clydebank.” The production of Touching Cloth in Clydebank Town Hall is due to get underway at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 and are available by calling Tram Direct on 0141 637 0778, or logging on to: www.tramdirect.com.
