A MIDWIFE’S bag, LPs, singles and beauty products dating back 50 years are among the many artifacts currently on display at Clydebank Museum.

Collated during a year-long history project, the items are displayed inside memory boxes created by West Dunbartonshire Women’s History Group (WDWHG) who want to remember women’s history from the 1950s and '60s.

A handbook has been created to accompany the two chests filled with items popular in the 1950s and '60s. It records the memories of women who grew up in that era.

WDWHG carried out the project 'Women Making History in West Dunbartonshire’ with the help of Glasgow Women’s Library.

With rapid social change in the past 60 years, the project aimed to document how women lived in West Dunbartonshire in the swinging '60s, at a time when there were great advances in technology and changes in social attitudes.

WDWHG got in touch with Glasgow Women’s Library after securing funding from the Sharing Heritage Lottery Grant in 2014.

The project was dedicated to documenting local women’s history be it their school life, work, marriage, courtship and interests.

A celebration was held at Clydebank Town Hall on Friday, August 14, to mark the end of the research project, when the handbook and memory boxes were unveiled. Lorna Stevenson, of Glasgow Women’s Library, said: “The aim of the project was to document and preserve local women’s history and highlight its importance in shaping our heritage.

“The women involved hoped to give women’s history, so often neglected, the recognition it deserves.

“Over this year they have worked hard to research and record the social life experiences of West Dunbartonshire’s local women during the 1950s and '60s and have developed a set of unique community and educational resources. What a great way to showcase these wonderful living histories.” WDWHG want to show the public how this resource can be loaned out for hands-on use at schools, community groups, care homes, day care facilities, local events, and to display in community venues.

A workshop will take place on Saturday, August 22 from 10.30am to midday and 1.30pm to 3pm in the Heritage Centre of Dumbarton Library.
