A CLYDEBANK Rugby Club player was fined last week for stealing toys from a car in a hospital car park.

Kevin Renahan, 24, pleaded guilty to taking toys, a pair of 3D glasses, sunglasses and £1.80 from the car at Vale of Leven Hospital in an incident the sheriff branded ‘bizarre’.

Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard Renahan was drunk when teamed up with a pal to carry out the unusual crime.

Fiscal depute Alistair Mitchell said the Toyota Auris was parked at Vale of Leven Hospital between 7pm on August 28 last year and 12.30am the following morning.

He said: “The owner of the vehicle was aware there were people in the vicinity of his care. He went to investigate and there were two people in the vicinity of his car. When he approached them the two ran off, one saying ‘sorry’.

“The police were called and the accused was found in the possession of items with a total value of £22. He was intoxicated.” Renahan, of Glasgow Road, Clydebank, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing and sentence was deferred until last week for him to be of good behaviour.

His lawyer, Roddy Boag, said Renahan had been of good behaviour and had started playing for Clydebank Rugby Club which involved a ‘degree of self discipline’.

He said Renahan, who had a very difficult background, had been drunk and with a couple of pals and ‘took advantage of the situation’.

Sheriff Maxwell Hendry said Renahan had shown the court he could keep out of trouble by being of good behaviour since his last hearing and fined him £100.
