CANS, bottles and even dirty syringes — just some of the litter left strewn across Drumchapel streets after being chucked away by owners who no longer have any use for it.

Now the area has been freshened up after more than 250 people came together for the 2015 Team Up Clean Up in an effort to make Drumchapel an area to be proud of.

Organised by the Clean Up Crew, a branch of the G15 Youth Project, the event saw members of the community from nursery children to elderly pensioners lend a hand from June 15 until Sunday, June 21.

Peter Divers, a detached youth worker at G15, told the Post: “We wanted to encourage volunteering in the community while getting residents young and old to put their litter in the bin and take pride in the community around them.

“It was also useful because different groups in the community started communicating with each other, helping the networking process.

“We have met local people when we have been out and about who have all been very supportive, telling us to keep up the good work. Some even approached us asking if they could get involved.” Among those taking part in the scheme last week were church groups, army cadets, primary schools and organisations for disabled people.

David Walker, of Community Safety Glasgow, assisted with litter picking equipment, bin bags and and the uplifting of piles of rubbish during the clean-up, the second event of its kind.

Mr Divers explained that the original litter pick took place last year and was intended to be a one-off. Its success, however, led to a return in 2015 and there are hopes a similar event can be staged next year.

“So many people have shown an interest in taking part,” the 33-year-old said. “Next year we can hopefully hold it again but I would also like to meet other youth organisations in the north west of the city to see if the event can be expanded over a wider area.” Mr Divers added: “Drumchapel is a beautiful place. There is green grass and litter makes that all disgusting so we want people to take ownership and enjoy the great outdoors, with everything the area has to offer.” More information on the work of the Clean Up Crew is available by logging on to the organisation’s Facebook page, emailing streetworker2@g15yp.co.uk or calling 0141 944 8868.
