Emergency services were called to Burns Street after the incident was reported at 5.25pm.
Eye-witnesses claimed they saw flames leaping from a gas main which had been left open to the elements.
Two appliances were sent from Clydebank Fire Station, arriving within five minutes of the call being taken.
Firefighters were in attendance for an hour, during which time the site was cordoned off and Scottish Power was notified.
Engineers from the company attended, and it was found cables had been damaged by a third party in the area.
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed the incident was caused by arcing electricity from live electrical cables underground as a result of rainfall. There was no supply disruption.
