But Alex Harvey — frontman of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band — is alive and well in this area after a bunch of musicians got together to set up a tribute act.

Calling themselves the Sensational Alex Harvey Experience, the five-piece group practise in Old Kilpatrick but hail from Faifley, Knightswood and Renfrew.

Members include Andy Massie on lead vocals, David Cowan on keyboard and backing singing, Willy McConagle on lead guitar, Jack McDougall on bass, as well as drummer Graham Platt.

Glasgow-born Alex Harvey died of a massive heart attack in 1982, a day before his 47th birthday. The songwriter’s legacy lives on and the local tribute act is now picking up a grassroots following of the legendary rocker’s fans.

David Cowan told the Post: “The band is constantly growing and our popularity is on the increase. We perform all the songs identical to the original with all the stage show theatrics, make-up, costumes.” The band are megafans of SAHB and all attended their gigs in the 1970s. They formed in 2013 and were originally known as The Resonators, a purely bass outfit and covers band with a few different members.

Their favourite SAHB tracks to perform are the Faith Healer, Give my Compliments to the Chef, Tomahawk Kid and Man in the Jar.

David said: “We were asked to put together a set for a charity gig which is held annually in Glasgow called Sahbrock and the response we got from the SAHB faithful was outstanding. We decided to keep it going and we now go out as Sensational Alex Harvey Experience more than The Resonators due to popular demand.” The keys player also told how he has worked with Chris Glen, who was a member of the real SAHB, in his latest band The Outfit in performing shows around Glasgow.

The guys are preparing for a special gig in Glasgow music bar Audio on Saturday, February 7, to celebrate what would have been Alex Harvey’s 80th birthday.
