The Asda worker believes her strict Catholic family did not want the shame of unmarried birthmum Lily Georgina Leslie having children.

Lily, who lived in Crown Avenue in Clydebank and was aged 20 at the time, gave her daughter up to the Church of Scotland adoption services.

All her documents are thought to have been destroyed in a fire — leaving Amanda with many questions over the family she never met.

She said: “I’m looking for Clydebank Post readers to help me find out more about my birthmum was like as a person, family background and even if she had any relatives.” Amanda started her research when she was in her 20s but after discovering her biological mother Lily had died aged 44 in 1993 she became overwhelmed with grief and ceased her search.

However, on and off, she kept up the search and now she has a family of her own she is desperate to find out answers to her own past.

And she wants to learn more about her mum — who she believes was forced to sign adoption papers by allegedly hardline Catholic father Arthur Leslie.

While she knows it may not be possible Amanda is still looking to somehow track down her two older brothers, who were also given up for adoption by a young Lily.

She has speculated that the fact Lily gave her away with instructions to be raised as a Protestant was to spite her strict Catholic father, of whom had allegedly forced her to give the babies away.

Amanda said: “When you’re adopted it’s something you always want to know more about — you always want to know more about your own identity, background, medical history and such.

“When I started my investigating I was in my 20s and found out Lily had passed away. I was so shocked and devestated that I left it.

“But now my own parents have passed away I have decided to start my search again — it’s an urge and feeling that never goes away. You try and put it to the back of your mind but it just niggles and niggles away at you.

“It’s something I have to do — I just need some sort of closure in this jigsaw that I am a piece of.” Divorced Amanda has two children now, son Kieran, 13, and daughter Amy, 12, and lives in Falkirk, working at an Asda distribution centre.

The 46-year-old also told how her adopted mother and father loved her very much — but their biological son resented Amanda’s entrance to the family, making her upbringing difficult.

“I never felt like I belonged there,” she told us. “My new mum and dad never spoke about my adoption — they did love me, but I just felt I shouldn’t have been there from the beginning.” Amanda is appealing to Clydebank Post readers for information on her mother Lily Georgina Leslie and would like to know any details.

She is thought to have married a George Mooney and lived in Alexandra for a period as well.

Lily’s sister goes by the surname Esdale, and Amanda told how there are many Esdales in Clydebank that could have clues to her past.
