Brianna Jolly landed the lead part in Clydebank Musical Society’s junior production of ‘Hairspray’, which recently ran at the town hall for three nights.

The young cast, which also featured many of Brianna’s schoolmates from St Peter the Apostle High, raised the roof with three hugely entertaining performances.

Brianna, 17, was thrilled to play main character Tracey Turnblad and revealed the show has increased her desire for a successful stage career.

She said: “It was an amazing experience and I loved every minute of it. Tracy was one of my dream roles and I’m grateful for the chance I had to play her. This experience has really contributed to the musical theatre career I’m aiming for.

“I was honored to work with such a committed and talented cast under the supervision of an amazing director, choreographer and musical director. I’m sure the audiences we had over three nights enjoyed the show.” The junior section of Clydebank Musical Society (CMS) performed their first show ‘Grease’ in 1990 and have been wowing audiences every year since.

The Hairspray production, staged on October 23-25, tells the story of Tracey Turnblad (Brianna Jolly) who is obsessed with The Corny Collins (Calum Fraser) Show and one of its dancers.

Though rejected by producer Velma Von Tussle (Megan Hillan) at auditions, when Tracey shows off some moves at the Sophomore Hop, Corny Collins gives her a place on the show.

Tracey is soon launched to stardom, but can’t stand that the show won’t allow integration and does everything in her power to make it happen.

This year in particular had a large number of St Peter the Apostle High pupils, however talented teens from Clydebank High and schools outwith the town also played important roles.

Christine Long, a CMS committee member, said: “We had a couple of junior from Helensburgh, a few from Dumbarton and my grandson even came from Lenzie.

“We attract young people from all over because Clydebank Musical Society has such a good name.

“Hairspray completely sold out two weeks in advance — and we were still getting late requests for tickets.

“The cast performed to 450 people each night and they all did a fantastic job. The provost attended on the Saturday night with a large group of guests, who were also having a function in the town hall.

“After the show he invited all the juniors along for food and drinks, which was a nice touch.” Christine told how several past members have gone to have successful careers in musical theatre and insists Brianna has the star quality to do the same.

She said: “Brianna was outstanding, she will definitely go far.

“She’s a great dancer, great singer and brilliant actress. I’m proud of her and the rest of the cast.” The CMS adult section will stage a production of Little Shop of Horrors next March.
