The council is set to be given an additional £5.5 million boost to improve its housing stock from the £10.8 billion local government allocation, as well as the cash put forward for the new Our Lady and St Patrick’s High School in Dumbarton.

The Finance Secretary John Swinney made the announcements in his budget speech to parliament last Thursday.

Mr Swinney said: “We have already delivered more than 21,000 affordable homes in Scotland. This £5.5 million boost to housing in West Dunbartonshire will help even more people get their feet on the housing ladder.” Improved transport links across the region, including the redevelopment of Bowling Harbour, were promised by the Finance Secretary.

Council tax has remained frozen and people will continue to benefit from free prescriptions, school meals and personal care for the elderly.

A total of 600 hours of free childcare for three and four-year-olds and vulnerable two-year-olds will go on, Swinney announced.

He also renewed the government’s commitment to the living wage and measures made to fully mitigate the hated Bedroom Tax.
