Kate Still set up an online petition which has gained more than 10,000 signatures from members of the public voicing their concerns on the potential loss of nearly seven acres of Victoria Park.

She told the Post that losing the space, including the site of the blaes playing fields, would be a tragedy for those who live nearby.

The youth charity worker said: “I started the petition because I feel strongly that the council should be protecting our parks, not selling them off to the highest bidder. Increasingly parks across the country are reducing as land is taken to build roads, flats, garden centres and other commercial purposes.

“I live near Victoria Park and I like seeing people enjoy it: dog walkers, families, runners, the elderly and young people.” Supporters of the petition made their feelings clear online.

One commented: “I signed this petition because I want this beautiful space preserved for future generations. It holds many happy childhood memories for so many who spent hours playing here.” Another supporter of the petition agreed and wrote: “I enjoyed the park when I was a wee boy. Many years later, I took my family to the park for them to enjoy.

“My grandchildren should be able to take their grandchildren there to enjoy it also. I don’t think that my beautiful photos should be all we have to remember.” Earlier this month the Post reported on proposals from a local pressure group, Friends of Victoria Park (FoVP), to convert the area into a community orchard.

For Kate, the hope is that the site can be maintained for locals and visitors to enjoy.

She added: “Parks allow people to relax in green space, particularly those who don’t have gardens. I believe we need to protect them so there are safe, traffic-free areas for children to play.

“There are lots of derelict brownfield sites that could be sold off instead. Citizens own the parkland and we should be able to enjoy it freely. Green space is so important for our long-term health and wellbeing.

“I am amazed by the response and the lovely comments of support from people and I want to thank the Clydebank Post readers for all their support.

“Hopefully Glasgow City Council will take account of people’s views.” Anyone looking to sign Kate Still’s petition should log on to: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-victoria-park-from-being-sold-off-to-commercial-interests
