Brave Dorothy MacMillan has been battling the illness since 2010 and has been receiving treatment from the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre in Anniesland.

The 57-year-old Clydebank woman is enormously grateful for the care shown by staff and her husband Donald, 59, a retired gas technician, and son Derek, 28, a distillery worker, showed their appreciation by taking on a dreaded bungee jump at the crane.

After setting out to raise £1,000, they recently handed over a cheque worth £9,125 to the Beatson Cancer Charity.

“The Beatson has helped me so much since I was diagnosed,” said Dorothy. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here right now.” Dorothy, who now has cancer of the lungs, brain, pancreas and skin has told how she was left humbled by the efforts her husband and son put in.

The mum-of-two said: “It’s been fantastic — I know they were nervous before, but it was worth it. I’m extremely proud of them.

“I’m still receiving reflexology treatment at the Beatson once a week at the moment.” Son Derek’s employer, Glenturret Whisky Distillery, and Robertson Trust matched the donation — which saw the £3041 raised trebled to £9,125.

“I was diagnosed with cancer in January 2010 and I had to take all the drugs and treatment for it,” Dorothy said. “I’ve strayed quite a bit since then, the cancer was already in my lungs, brain and pancreas — so we’ve done bits and pieces for the Beatson before.

“This time we decided we’ll jump off the titan crane. We only hoped to raise £1,000 but that obviously went way above.” She praised bowling clubs around the Clydebank area for their donations.

“We’re so grateful to all the bowling clubs around the Clydebank district for their donations. My husband plays bowls and he’s an umpire, so most of them pitched in to the fund.

“The Beatson do an incredible job helping people — it’s so important that they get the funds to help others suffering from cancer.

“I’m so thankful to all those who have donated, and especially to the Beatson for helping me this far through my illness.”
