The 54-year-old was walking in Balmoral Street at around 1.10pm when he was knocked over by a Peugeot 107 car at the junction with Dumbarton Road.
He suffered serious head injuries and is currently being treated at the Southern General Hospital where he is said to be in a critical condition.
Police Scotland is appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the accident to come forward.
Police constable John O’Hara said: “I know the area was busy at the time and there are a number of drivers and pedestrians who may have witnessed the accident. I would like anyone who saw anything at all to contact me as every little detail helps us build a complete picture of what happened.” Anyone with any information can contact PC O’Hara at Police Scotland on 101.
