A NEW recycling centre is set to be built on the banks of the Clyde - creating nearly 200 jobs.

The proposed North Clyde Recycling Centre, which would require an investment of at least £35m, will transform the disused dockyard into a sustainable resource centre which aims to extract the maximum value from waste.

Peel Environmental is behind the plans to invest in the facility at Rothesay Dock.

The North Clyde Recycling Centre will create up to 40 permanent jobs and 150 construction jobs.

It will also include a visitor and education centre for use by schools and the community.

Rob Watson, development manager at Peel Environmental, said: "This investment will not only play a key part in the regeneration of the Clyde waterfront, but also provide important facilities to help Scotland achieve its zero waste objectives.

"Waste is a valuable resource and our proposed North Clyde Recycling Centre will increase the amount of waste that is recycled, generate renewable energy and create a fuel from the remaining waste that would otherwise go to landfill."

Two public exhibitions will be held on the proposals so residents can find out more and have their say. The first is on Monday January 23, and the second on Tuesday January 24, both from 12pm to 8pm at the Beardmore Hotel, Dalmuir.

If people have any queries they can visit the project website www.peel.co.uk/ncrc or contact the community information line on 0131 226 1951 which is open during office hours.
