CLYDEBANK could have its own brand of beer if an industry chief's wish is granted.

The boss of a booming distillery in the town wants to make a unique real ale from the slopes of the Kilpatrick Hills, using the expertise its staff already have in producing whisky.

But Mike Keiller, chief executive of Morrison Bowmore Distillers, which runs the Auchentoshan distillery in Mountblow, will have to convince the money men at the company to back his vision for a microbrewery before firm plans are put together.

The whisky supremo is due to meet with executives from Morrison Bowmore's Japanese parent company Suntory late this year.

The small brewery would produce specialist ales and forms a part of Mr Keiller's plans to expand the famous Clydebank Auchentoshan brand.

He said: "We haven't worked out exactly what kind of funding it would take, but it's part of our plan.

"It will definitely be on my wish-list when I meet with Suntory to discuss next year's investment."

The second annual Auchentoshan Whisky Festival takes place on Saturday August 28 at the Mountblow distillery.

It welcomed 2,600 visitors last year and returns with a wider range of activities this year, including falconery, food tasting, magic and comedy shows, kids' entertainment and the all-important whisky tastings, with some rare and unique malts on offer.
