A rogue clothing collection bank - believed to be linked to an international money making scam - has been illegally placed in the town.

Councillor Willie Hendrie noticed the donation bank, which can easily be confused as a legitimate charity collection container, last week.

It suddenly appeared in Durban Avenue, Dalmuir, and when Councillor Hendrie made enquiries, it soon emerged that it was very similar to other banks popping up across Scotland linked to a rag trade scam.

Two Polish brothers who sell the clothes in second-hand shops abroad for huge profits are believed to be behind the con.

Councillor Hendrie noticed the bank at the start of last week and after reading an article in last week's Post he was prompted to dig deeper into the matter.

We reported how clothing donation bags intended for the British Heart Foundation ended up at Yoker car boot sale, while others are apparently being swiped by greedy commercial collectors instead of going to the charity.

The scams have taken off due to the soaring price of rag cloth which is bought so it can be recycled for other uses.

Councillor Hendrie said: "I saw the clothing bank and I thought it was strange because I would know if there was supposed to be one there.

"When I saw the story in the Post I thought I better find out about it.

"I'm pretty concerned that residents are getting ripped off and legitimate charities could be losing out.

"A lot of people can't be bothered going to the shopping centre to put their things into shops that they know are legitimate.

"Clothing banks are a good thing but only if they are legitimate."

Councillor Hendrie says the illegal bank will be removed and replaced with a proper council one that benefits charities.

West Dunbartonshire Council said it is not aware of any more of these banks in the area but that it will be monitoring the situation.
