Hi-tech security
SHOPPERS at Clyde Shopping Centre may have noticed staff motoring up the mall on an unusual two-wheeled machine.
It is known as the Segway PT and it is a zero-emission battery powered transporter used to move quickly about crowded and indoor areas.
They are used by theme parks across the world and were used by the police at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Clyde Shopping Centre is half a mile long and staff are trialling the Segway to see if it helps them to do their jobs more efficiently, by being able to reach different parts of the centre more quickly.
And because the Segway lifts the rider up off the ground, it will also make staff easier to see.
Andrew Forrester, centre manager, said: "We are always looking at ways of improving our customer service and security and as the centre is half a mile long we decided to test the Segway as a way of getting around the centre as quickly and safely as possible."
To move forward or backward on the Segway, the rider just leans slightly forward or backward.
To turn left or right, the rider simply moves the LeanSteer frame left or right.
