When a girl throws a party, it’s usually a reason to dress to impress.

But fashion was well and truly ditched - quite literally - when Neive Bell from Clydebank held a “celebration” to mark her 10th birthday.

Neive decided to invite a bunch of friends to take part in a sponsored 5K Pretty Muddy Race for Life event in Pollok Park to raise funds for Cancer Research UK (CRUK).

And instead of party gear, the girls wore running outfits plus pink tutus and headbands to climb, crawl and charge over a muddy obstacle course.

Neive, who attends Goldenhill Primary, had always wanted to raise money for the cancer charity through an event such as Pretty Muddy and her friends jumped at the opportunity to take part.

There were also family reasons why Neive, pictured in number 760168, chose CRUK for the madcap adventure.

Her great uncle, Joe Higgins from Faifley, died from cancer at the age of 55 in March and her grandad, Taffy Davies, 78, from Parkhall, has had his own battle with the disease.

Although Neive’s 10th birthday was back in July, she thought the charity fundraiser on September 9 would be a really special way to mark the occasion.

She bought the tutus and head bands with her own money and her friends mum bought the t-shirts.

Her gran Margaret Davies was there on the day to make a video of the girls up to their eyes in mud.

Neive, who is a member of the Dynamite Gymnastics Club in Clydebank, said: “It was great fun and all my friends enjoyed taking part. I wanted to raise money for cancer research and decided this would be a good way to do it.”

Mum Lee told the Post she was proud of Neive’s fundraising of £954 to date.
