A CLYDEBANK woman's innovative work at her new bridal shop has led to her being shortlisted for an award.

Deborah Mulholland, 25, has been nominated for Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the Royal Bank of Scotland Great British Entrepreneur Awards for the work with her venture Brides in the City.

She claims price, service and customisation is what makes her Glasgow-based shop Brides in the City stand out.

The self professed "girly girl", who has always loved weddings, studied fashion technology at Glasgow Clyde College while working part time in a bridal shop.

Determined to be her own boss, she created a business plan and opened her own shop in April this year.

Deborah told the Post: "I find being a new business challenging. There's always something unexpected around the corner but overall its brilliant and really rewarding. Having my own business is amazing I really enjoy my job."

The dresses in store are samples designed by Deborah that cost up to £999.

After a consultation, customers then personalise the dress to how they want it and the details are sent to a manufacturer for theirs to be made.

Deborah added: "The best part is people picking my designs and saying that they want to wear them. The shop is about highlighting that picking a wedding dress is an experience and not just saying 'this is the dress', because it is a big deal.

"Customers can bring out their own creative side by customising the dresses. They can change the straps, add more sparkle, change the stretch, material and fabric to whatever they like. The shop is all about being creative with the brides.

"I want people to come in and have an amazing time and customers get this thanks to my staff as well. They really do care, it's not just a job for them."

More than 500 applications were sent after Deborah advertised her vacancies and in only a few months the businesses Facebook Page has already racked up 93 five-star reviews.

"My staff are amazing, I have trained them all on design techniques, so they are not just consultants but stylists," she added. "They can advise and help the customers change parts of a dress."

It was one of the staff members, Cara, who encouraged Deborah to apply for the awards and the businesswoman didn't think anything would come of it.

A record number of applications were submitted this year and past winners have included Just Eat's David Buttress.

She said: "To be shortlisted is amazing. It's really cool and actually surreal because there are lots of other businesses doing what I am doing, so it's flattering people have looked at my business and thought that it deserves this recognition."

Right now, Deborah is focusing on the newly opened shop by trying to make it as successful as it can be and exactly how she wants it however plans to have one in each city.

Brides in the City is based at 30 St Georges Road, Charing Cross, Glasgow or visit facebook.com/bridesinthecityglasgow for more information.

The awards will take place on November 8 in Edinburgh.
