A CLYDEBANK man has been jailed for two years after being caught carrying an axe in the town.

Fraser Carroll, 32, whose address was given as a prisoner of Low Moss Prison, Bishopbriggs, appeared for sentencing at Dumbarton Sheriff Court this month.

Carroll behaved in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm.

He acted in an aggressive manner and was shouting, repeatedly kicked a door and brandished an axe. He also admitted possessing an axe in public. The incident happened on May 27 at a house in Cleddans View.

His lawyer told the court: “He had been drinking all day and words were exchanged.

“In the throws of intoxication he acted in a way he should not have.

“He pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and has previous convictions for possession of weapons and acts of violence.

“The last time he committed a similar offence was in 2012 and before that 2006.

“It appears he only does these things every six years.”

Carroll was rebuked by Sheriff William Gallacher for appearing from custody and walking into the dock wearing shorts.

He told the offender: “This is a court, not a public park.

“You choose what to wear coming to court and I seriously considered not dealing with your case until you re-appeared properly dressed. I am not impressed.”

He added: “You have a significant criminal history with regards to public disorder, the carrying of weapons and of using them.

“This was an axe and had you used it the harm you could have caused would have been catastrophic.”

Sheriff Gallacher said that had it not been for Carroll’s early plea, he would have jailed him for three years. The sentence was backdated to May 24.
