A CLYDEBANK dance school’s youngsters collected four world champion trophies at the biggest competition in their calendar.

April’s Street Feet competed at the UDO World Street Dance Championships in Glasgow’s SEC last month against crews from as far afield as China, Australia and Africa.

The Dalmuir-based school is split into three different age groups, the under-12 QT Crew, the under-10 BBY Crew and the under-18 Prestige group.

As well as the four world championship prizes for QT Crew’s group performance, a quad and two duos, the girls managed to grab another 12 top places.

Dance teacher April Stuart-Macrae, 25, from Old Kilpatrick, said she couldn’t be more proud of all the youngsters.

She said: “It is one of our biggest achievements as it is the biggest competition of the year. You need to qualify all year round to even get there so for us to win so many places is amazing.

“It is an achievement, especially when you’re competing against schools that have been open for much longer. Our dance school has such a good reputation at these events thanks to the kids and it means the world to me seeing them do this well.”

Opening only four years ago and starting as a small Saturday class in Duntocher, the school has now got its own studios with six members of staff and has been crowned world champions.

April, who has danced since she was aged two, opened the school after travelling and competing across the globe.

She said: “When I returned home I wanted to give something back to the kids of Clydebank and give them the opportunities I had in life.

“To see the kids up on that huge stage was nerve-racking as I know how much this means to them, their parents – and myself, of course. But I was so proud to see them absolutely smash it.

“As a kid, it must be so overwhelming. I have kids as young as four go up there. It must be so nerve-wracking especially after seeing the talent from other groups.

“When they go to the worlds it’s their biggest competition. There’s so many good crews, you think, ‘Wow there’s no way we’ll beat them’ – the level of dance is just unreal.”

The school teaches all styles of dance for all ages and abilities as well as gymnastics, singing and drama.

April’s Street Feet are always welcoming new students.

Whether you would like your child to be part of the Scottish, British or World Championship Team or just take part in fun beginner classes, there’s a place for everyone, no matter what their age or ability.
