A Faifley community church is planning to open a soup kitchen to promote health and well-being within the area.

The Faifley Seventh-day Adventist Church say the decision has been led by the local community’s response to past events such as their “International Grub Day” which saw more than 100 people of 15 different nationalities attend.

Around 40 dishes were prepared for people to eat while socialising at the free event.

The church members said: “We have recognised that that there are many people in our area who would like to have someone to talk to.

“Through the soup kitchen, we will be able to chat with someone over a bowl of soup and hopefully in the long run it will be open daily.

“We feel it’s important to promote health and wellbeing in our community. We strongly believe that the soup kitchen will bring a sense of connection and belonging, as well as enhancing a healthy lifestyle to our community.”

A fundraising event will be taking place at the church on Craig’s Avenue at 2.30pm on Saturday, August 25 to raise money to help with the cost of opening the soup kitchen.

Equipment and utilities will be purchased with the money raised on the day.

Special guests Testify, a choir from Edinburgh, and The Levites, a London based choir, will be performing on the day as well as Elder Moses, Faifley’s own gospel singer.

Yvonne Blake, the church's community outreach, said: “Come in your numbers and have a great time to support the opening of a new community soup kitchen.”

Previously, the church members have organised projects including litter picking and gardening for residents who are not able to carry this out themselves as well as a prayer walk with the rest of the churches in Clydebank during the Queens Baton Relay as part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
