Forty youngsters from Drumchapel have won £5,000 in funding which will take them on adventure weekends at two of Scotland’s best known beauty spots.

The G15 Youth Project has been awarded the money by the Sir Arnold Clark Summer Camp Fund, launched in April by Radio Clyde Cash for Kids in memory of Sir Arnold.

The youth group intend to use the fund to provide young people with residential sleepovers at Aberfoyle and Millport where they’ll enjoy activities including biking, canoeing and watersports.

Joyce Bell, project co-ordinator at G15 Youth Project, told the Post: “The award gives us more scope to plan a programme of activities, particularly for young people and deliver a fun-packed residential camp.

“This goes towards building and developing young people’s confidence, planning skills and working together with others.

“A large organisation like Arnold Clark connecting within their local communities is nothing short of amazing and in particular recognising the worth of young people and investing in their future.”

Local councillor Paul Carey said: “This is fantastic. I hope that further companies will get involved in similar projects in the future and will give more young people opportunities.

“Once again, this organisation has led the way in working with young people and this is a prime example, not only in Glasgow, but throughout Scotland for others to follow.”

A number of applications were received by the closing date on June 1, with the G15 Youth Project selected by a panel featuring representatives from Arnold Clark and Radio Clyde Cash for Kids.

The weekend activities are designed to challenge anti-social behaviour as well as teaching invaluable life skills such as first aid.

Later in the year, 10 young people from the project will be welcomed to Arnold Clark’s Hillington head office for a work experience programme.

Eddie Hawthorne, Arnold Clark chief executive and group managing director, said the money would be used to really benefit children.

He added: “Sir Arnold Clark was a big supporter of providing opportunities to young people and my colleagues and I are very proud to be able to help G15 with this donation.”
