Iceland operations director Ewan McMahon said: "We have more than 900 stores across the UK and log between six and 20 serious incidents each week, many involving physical assaults on our staff, often involving the use of a weapon such as a knife or syringe.

"We are grateful to all our 24,000 store colleagues for the great job they do in serving the public and keeping consistently positive and cheerful in the face of these challenges.

"If trouble arises, we always advise them to put their own safety first and we are determined to do our utmost to protect them and to ensure that thieves are brought to justice.”

Met Police said a woman has been charged following an alleged assault in a Croydon shop on Saturday.

She is due in court next month.
