A BAND from Clydebank will play its first headline gig this weekend.

Gardening for Bumblebees – comprising lead singer and guitarist Sam Begbie and drummer Joe Boyle – will perform at the Oran Mor as part of the West End Festival on Saturday, June 2.

The pair have only been gigging for six months but have a growing fanbase and reputation, having already ticked Celtic Connections and King Tut’s off the bucket list.

Sam said the journey they are on has “been a bit mental” but revealed the act are enjoying every minute of it.

He told the Post: “I’m still trying to get to grips with it. Joe’s a bit more cool headed than me but we are just taking it one day at a time. It’s just about playing some good tunes.”

The band has two permanent members in Sam and Joe and are joined by others who drift in and out for performances.

Sam continued: “We are a sort of collective. We play with different people at different times. There’s the two of us that are always in the band.

“We then get different people into play with us. It’s just the way it has happened.

“I’ve known Joe since I was a kid, but I had never played with him. I knew he was a good drummer and we set up a jam session and it just clicked.”

Sam, 23, is a community musician by trade, while 19-year-old Joe studies instrument making.

The former added: “We have been doing small gigs and working away and stuff like that, doing wee gigs like Bowling Harbour and then we did Celtic Connections.

“That was quite a big thing and it was a big audience at the Royal Concert Hall. We then did King Tut’s last month.

“It’s our first headline gig at Oran Mor. We are pumped. It’s great to be part of the West End Festival. It’s something a bit bigger.

“We are feeling good and we are looking forward to playing. We are expecting it to be busy.”

Gardening for Bumblebees count Jeff Buckley and Led Zeppelin among their influences and focus on producing clever lyrics.

“We are kind of indie-folk,” said Sam. “But we are a wee bit rock as well.

“We are influenced by real singers like Jeff Buckley and Led Zeppelin but we really like clever music like Talking Heads and The Waterboys.”
