THE QE2 is back in business, opening tomorrow as a hotel for the first time, the Post can reveal.

It’s been 10 years since the famous Clyde-built liner left the area for the last time and was taken out of service, with little news of progress by new owners in Dubai until recent weeks.

Then on Monday they announced it would finally open as a star attraction in Mina Rashid for guests looking for a hotel with a proud and unique history.

Supporters and fans of the QE2 have welcomed the announcement by PCFC Hotels, part of the Dubai government’s Ports, Customs and Free Zones Corporation.

The hotel owners said it has taken 2.7 million man-hours to transform the liner into a tourist destination.

Hamza Mustafa, CEO of PCFC Hotels, said: “To finally open the QE2 is a dream come true for my team and me. It is one of Dubai’s most highly anticipated projects and we know that a lot of people are going to be very excited to see her for the first time, or to step back on board the vessel that created so many wonderful memories during her 40 years at sea.

“I am very proud to reintroduce her to the world as she embarks on the next stage of her celebrated journey. It has been an honor to work on this wonderful project and to help ensure that our lovely lady lives up to her new slogan: still making history.”

The 13-deck hotel has maintained many interior design features such as period furniture, paintings and memorabilia. Guest rooms have been modernised but with the original porthole windows to give the maritime feel, said bosses.

Adjacent to the hotel is the QE2 Exhibition, a museum showcasing the liner during the 1960s when she was a pioneer in design, technology and lifestyle.

The ship has 13 room and suite categories for visitors and two royal suites named after the Queen’s mother and grandmother.

Promoters said this was a “soft launch” and the grand opening will be in October.
